#GivingTuesday has become an annual part of the consumer holidays following Thanksgiving that include: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. The day was created to remind consumers, as they dive into the final frenzy of holiday (aka Christmas) shopping, to stop and think about alternative gifts and the charitable spirit that is supposed to imbue the holiday season. It is a good opportunity to reflect on how fortunate one is and to consider how one can help someone who is less fortunate. Of course their are a plethora of good causes, but today, #GivingTuesday, is a day to consider all kinds of charities and human service organizations.
SERCAP’s VFC Alternative Break is program that reaches so many individuals from all walks of life. Student volunteers gain job skills and a perspective on rural America that they would not get from any other experience. Community members learn how to plan and organize activities that benefit their communities and gain a perspective from interacting the student volunteers that is unique to the VFC program. VFC is a great opportunity for all who participate, but the program is not free. This year, SERCAP’s VFC Alternative Break program will dedicate all donations received on #GivingTuesday to the establishment of a #Scholarship program that will allow low-income students to participate in the program.
